Golden Heart Day!Well - Golden Heart Day a day late. Better late than never, right?
Yesterday was wild! I didn't enter this year, so I didn't have the stress of sitting around waiting for that phone call. BUT, I had several friends I was cheering for and keeping fingers crossed all day for. Several made it!! Sadly, a few didn't. It's times like this where you can really see where just sheer luck plays into the publishing game. I've read - and totally agree - it takes a few things to make it as a writer.
Talent - Perseverance & LUCK. Lots and lots of luck.
Did only the most talented final yesterday? No. There were alot of very talented people that finaled - but probably just as many that didn't make it this time. Not finaling is just that - not finaling. It's not the end of your writing career. Is finaling a sure thing to the fast track of being published? No. There is no sure thing. Just Talent - Perseverance & Luck.
So - to those that did final - especially, my very special friends -- Tawny Weber, Leslie Dicken, Stacey Lynn, Anna Sugden & Beth Burgoon -- SUPER MEGA CONGRATULATIONS!!! You think being a writer I'd have more to say than just a bunch of exclaimation points. I'm just so thrilled that you all are getting the wonderful recognition you deserve and that I have so many to cheer for this year. I hope that the Golden Heart experience is the ride of your life. Enjoy every second! I hope to see you all up on that stage in July!!
And to those that this just wasn't the year? Persevere!! Take a few days if you need them - but don't let this be something that keeps you down for long.

Fast ForwardWe were watching a dvd tonight and my 7-year-old said the funniest thing. It was the new, Yours, Mine and Ours movie - and at the beginning he said, "Can we just fast forward to when they meet?" He wanted to get right into the good stuff.
Of course that got me thinking about writing and about how important they say those first few pages are. Usually I try to get the hero and heroine together right off - without the 18 kids of course - :-). But then, I write the type of romances where usually you need them to meet right off - not enough room for much else to be going on.
But what if they don't meet right away? What are some things that writers can use to keep those first pages interesting and not something that makes the reader want to just flip ahead and get to the good stuff?

Where do story ideas come from? For the writers out there -- Where do your ideas for stories come from?
I'm supposed to do a little presentation at my next RWA chapter meeting on this topic - and I'm rather clueless. Shhh... that's just our little secret.
I've been thinking on it - and still not sure where mine come from. From everywhere I think. I just watch and observe everything. I was driving home from a day out a week or so ago and had to drive through this town where they had a crossing guard helping kids across the street after school. I sat and watched and thought to myself, now wouldn't he make an interesting character in a story? Maybe even a hero if he was a little younger - and sexier. Maybe an undercover cop or fbi agent? There on a mission to.... and it kept building and building. Of course I haven't written that one down yet - but I need to do that. Might be interesting.
I'd love to know where everybody else gets ideas though? Any place in particular?

Jane Millionaire ReviewOMG! I pretty much thought most of my reviews were in on Jane Millionaire, but I got an email from LoveRomances that one of Jane Millionaire had been posted!!! I'm so psyched!!! It's an awesome, awesome review!!!
Janalee wrote:
Jane Millionaire is the debut novel for author Janice Lynn. Have you ever had a book from the moment you opened the cover and start reading it just latches onto your heart? Jane Millionaire is that kind of novel. Ms. Lynn has taken a reality concept and kicked it up to a whole new level. With exceptional writing, characters that are life-like, and realistic dialogues. Readers will find comfort, friends, and a few chuckles within the bindings of Jane Millionaire. They really do not get much better than this novel!

Check it out!!! I'm sooooo thrilled. I know Jane's been out for a couple of months and that reading that someone actually enjoyed the story shouldn't send me orbiting to the moon, but it does. I have such a hard time believing people are reading a story I wrote, enjoying Jill and Rob as much as I do, and that reviewers are 'getting' my writing. For any of you chasing your dreams---keep chasing because OMG they really can come true!!! I'm living proof & keep pinching myself thinking I'm going to wake up and it not be real.Monday, February 06, 2006
Ok, so I'm a little hungryI need a doughnut. Just thought I'd share for fun. This site has alot of fun polls for blogs.
Not very many people know me well enough to know how funny my doughnut flavor is:
You Are a Powdered Devil's Food Donut |
A total sweetheart on the outside, you love to fool people with your innocent image. On the inside you're a little darker, richer, and more complex. You're a hedonist who demands more than one pleasure at a time. Decadent and daring, you test the limits of human indulgence. |
OH - and anybody watching 24 tonight?
Is anybody out there besides me crazy enough to bounce around between stories? As if it's not hard enough to keep things straight in my head - I've been bouncing between these three different stories I have going. I blame it on contest goals mostly. I just had to get these two new stories started for contests - and of course I have the story that I'm supposed to be finishing. I'm so bad. Any editors I might be targeting happen to be reading? CLOSE YOUR EYES. I'm so stuck in this requested story - not sure if it's the fear of finishing or just lack of inspiration - motivation - what ever the heck it is that it takes to push through those final chapters? Just not knowing for sure where I want to go? Yeah - that's it.
Anyway - that's so not what I was going to post about tonight.
Just curious if anybody works on more than one story at a time and if they have a hard time keeping the characters true to their own unique personalities when they do that? I have one hero that is supposed to be totally alpha male and the others just usually end up being whatever they are, I don't think about it much while I'm writing them usually. But, I can't help but wonder if when I'm writing one story and then switch over to another - if maybe the characters don't start all blending together and I end up shooting myself in the foot.
What's everybody think?
