Fast Forward

We were watching a dvd tonight and my 7-year-old said the funniest thing. It was the new, Yours, Mine and Ours movie - and at the beginning he said, "Can we just fast forward to when they meet?" He wanted to get right into the good stuff.

Of course that got me thinking about writing and about how important they say those first few pages are. Usually I try to get the hero and heroine together right off - without the 18 kids of course - :-). But then, I write the type of romances where usually you need them to meet right off - not enough room for much else to be going on.

But what if they don't meet right away? What are some things that writers can use to keep those first pages interesting and not something that makes the reader want to just flip ahead and get to the good stuff?
